INTERVIEW : Kathryn, Owner of Best Day Ever Party Shop

Meet Kathryn, the owner of Best Day Ever Party Shop. Mum of one little girl and another one well on it’s it way.  In this post she tells us how she transitioned from life in the big smoke to owning her own business.  Get insight into how she manages her business and looks after her little one.

IMG_6298Tell us a little bit about yourself…

My name is Kathryn, I live in South Croydon with my Husband James. We have been married for 4 years and have a little girl Annie and another baby on the way, due Aug 2018. Annie is 2 and a half, she’s very ‘spirited’ and knows her own mind but is so much fun. We are definitely raising a strong independent female and I wouldn’t want it any other way!

What’s your trade?

I was a Textile Buyer for 10 years for a large retail homeware chain but was made redundant while on Maternity leave. I took the opportunity to set up my own business. I always wanted to try something on my own and I craved a creative outlet while looking after Annie. I set up Best Day Ever Party Shop as I really think we should celebrate as many of life’s occasions and milestones as possible, whether these are big or small. Best day Ever Party Shop is an online web shop selling stylish and Modern party supplies to help bring your ‘Pinterest Parties’ to life! I also love showcasing lots of Party inspiration and DIYs on my social media pages and blog.

What made you choose your career?

I studied Fashion and Textiles at University and always had a keen interest in fabric, colour, art and design. It was natural to go into a buying job after graduation and I learnt so much in lots of different aspects of the role from costing and negotiating to product developing working with suppliers and factories. I developed more of an interest in events and styling when planning my own wedding and this sparked the original concept that has now developed into Best Day Ever Party Shop. I love seeing what orders come through and even better when a customer tags me in one of their party photos. I feel like I am helping people celebrate and make memories of amazing moments!

How your attitude towards work changed since having kids?

I am a lot more relaxed now I have had Annie. I was very career focused, worked really long hours and was always looking at the next milestone or promotion, KPI’s were life but now I have much more of a balance. Work/ Life balance is often over looked and it sounds cliché but having a baby really put things into perspective for me. In a way I was lucky to be made redundant so I wasn’t rushing back into that fast paced office environment and missing out on family time. I really believe its so important for employers to offer flexible working packages. Everyone is different with different family needs but there should be tailoring to fit these needs.

What’s your morning routine look like?

I used to have to commute from South Croydon into Baker Street everyday and since I’ve set up Best Day Ever Party Shop I work from home. I do not miss the commute at all especially with all the Southern Rail issues that there has been recently. I get most of my work done in the evenings after Annie’s bedtime. I have always been a night owl so this suits and the mornings with Annie are my favourite time of the day.

How do you balance childcare and working?

Annie goes to nursery two days a week and these are my full on working days. I use these days to really concentrate on the business, answering emails, product developing, sometimes photoshoots. Everyday is different and that’s why I enjoy it.

In 10 years… where do you see yourself?

I would love to have Best Day Ever Party Shop well established in the next 10 years. A Studio, a shop and a wholesale business with an extensive range of Best Day Ever Party Shop exclusive products all over the country and world. There are a lot of steps to get to this point but you have to think big.

Best piece of business advice…

“Start before you’re ready, otherwise you’ll never start!” I really needed this as I have a tendency to want everything to be perfect and would procrastinate when sometimes you just need to jump in.

Tips on managing the juggling act…

I’d say if you’re unhappy or if its not working for you, talk to your employer. They have an obligation to provide a productive working environment and its in their interests to keep their staff happy. I know that this isn’t always as easy as it sounds but its worth a try. If you are unhappy with your work/ life balance then you need to make a change and it starts with talking about what will work for you, your career, your family and your employer. To anyone thinking of setting up their own business or side hustle I’s say go for it. Make no mistake it takes a lot of hard work and you need to be really committed and passionate about what you do, but the rewards of working for yourself outweigh it all!
